Whether you prefer to call them jump drives, flash drives, USB drives, thumb drives, or pen drives, it doesn’t change the fact that these cheap, tiny portable storage devices have in many ways revolutionized the world of personal computing. First jumping into the spotlight in 2000, jump drives have all but replaced floppy disks. Capable of holding more data than an army of floppy disks could dream of, the USB jump drive is the standard for storing, transferring and backing up all kinds of data.
USB flash drives use the USB mass storage standard, making them universally compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. Jump drives are rewritable, and just like a floppy disk, data can be added, deleted and modified a virtually limitless number of times.
In most cases weighing less than 1 ounce and sizing up comparatively with a pack of gum, USB jump drives are truly a marvel of technology. As of 2009, storage capacities of the largest flash drives are as large as 256GB. That’s more storage space than the vast majority of computer hard drives – all capable of sliding in your pocket or hanging from your keychain.
Unlike their outdated floppy drive counterparts, USB thumb drives are incredibly durable. Made up of just a small printed circuit board and USB connector shielded by a protective plastic or metal casing, there is simply not much that can break on a flash drive. Additionally, flash drives have no mechanical moving parts that can break or malfunction, making these devices capable of withstanding significant trauma without losing their data.
Most pen drives derive their power directly from the USB connection when inserted into a computer, eliminating the need for a battery or external power source. In general, pen drives use the standard type-A USB connection, making them capable of being inserted into any Windows or Mac computer with a standard USB input – and, these days, you would be hard pressed to find any kind of a computer without at least a couple of these critical ports.
